Artist Barbara Clevenger Johnson taught at CSU, Chico from 1960 to 1995. She began as a demonstration teacher at Aymer J. Hamilton Lab School and then taught Elementary Education and Administration courses for the Department of Education. Barbara went on to serve as: Chair of the Education Department; Director of Credentials and Student Teaching; Director of Liberal Studies, and Director of the Intercultural Center.
Barbara didn't start doing art until she retired. Her greatest encouragement came from watercolor courses taken from Ann Pierce, who as Barbara put it, gave her a new way of seeing the world.
We are honored to have this gallery not only named after Barbara, but to see her spirit and passion for the arts shared with the community in which she grew up.
